In an exciting move towards sustainability and energy efficiency, Tomburn, a leader in commercial powder coating and specialist finishes services in the south of England, has completed the installation of an extensive photovoltaic (PV) solar panel system. This ambitious project, executed in collaboration with Solarsense UK Limited, aims to significantly reduce the company’s reliance on traditional energy sources while promoting environmental responsibility.
Tomburn’s operations, which involve energy-intensive processes, have been notably impacted by the dramatic increase in UK energy costs. Powder coating, one of the company’s primary services, is particularly demanding in terms of energy usage. This technique involves applying a dry powder to a surface, which is then cured under heat to form a durable, high-quality finish. Although electricity doesn’t power the high temperatures of the gas ovens used in the curing process it is used to power extraction, compressors and the treatment plant – which are all key components in the process of providing a high quality commercial powder coating service.
Recognising the financial and environmental benefits of alternative energy sources, the company set out to identify a solution that would secure its long-term sustainability. David O’Brien, Accounts Manager at Tomburn, explains, “With rising energy costs we had to consider a strategic approach to ensure both financial stability and a positive environmental impact. Solar energy emerged as the most viable option, offering a sustainable pathway forward.”
Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels, convert sunlight into electricity through the photovoltaic effect. They are made up of many individual solar cells composed of silicon and other materials that create an electric field. When sunlight hits these cells it excites electrons, generating direct current (DC) electricity. This DC electricity is then converted into alternating current (AC) electricity using an inverter, making it usable for businesses and homes.
Solar energy is a clean, renewable resource that reduces dependence on fossil fuels and minimises greenhouse gas emissions. By harnessing the sun’s power, businesses like Tomburn are able to significantly lower their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.
In choosing to switch to solar energy Tomburn aimed to generate 100% of its electricity usage during daylight hours in the summer months. This ambitious goal necessitated the installation of a substantial solar array capable of producing around 200,000 kWh annually. Fortunately, as you can see in the accompanying photography, Tomburn’s expansive roof space allowed for this large-scale installation with half of the roof now covered in high-efficiency solar panels.
The impact has been transformative. Previously, Tomburn’s annual daytime electricity consumption from the grid stood at approximately 500,000 kWh. With the new solar system in place, this figure has been nearly halved to around 300,000 kWh, underscoring the significant energy and cost savings achieved.
Key to the success of this project was the expertise provided by Solarsense UK Limited, one of the UK’s leading renewable energy specialists. With a proven track record of designing and installing bespoke solar solutions, Solarsense has enabled numerous businesses to transition to cleaner energy sources effectively.
Solarsense’s expertise in handling large-scale commercial installations was instrumental in ensuring the smooth execution of the project. Their team conducted a detailed assessment of Tomburn’s energy needs and designed a tailored solar solution that maximises energy production while minimising environmental impact.
Reflecting on the project’s success, David O’Brien notes, “The decision to invest in solar energy has proven to be a great idea with a payback period expected within three to four years – subject to the British weather! This initiative not only aligns with our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint but also offers substantial financial savings that strengthen our business resilience.”
Tomburn’s shift to solar energy marks a significant step forward in its journey towards sustainability. By harnessing the power of the sun, the company is not only reducing its environmental impact but also setting a precedent for other businesses in the industry to follow. This strategic move underscores the potential of solar power to transform energy-intensive industries, ensuring both environmental stewardship and financial viability.
