Tomburn invests in state-of-the-art pre-treatment plant setup

In a significant move to enhance environmental sustainability and operational efficiency, Tomburn has completed the installation of a cutting-edge plant setup – completed during the second half of 2024.

This investment was driven by the regulatory changes under UK REACH (UK registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals), starting in September 2024 which banned the use of chromate-based pre-treatment systems.

After extensive research, Tomburn selected Chemetal’s X4707 system for aluminium and an Oxysilan system for other metals, both of which boast impressive industry track records.

Understanding the Chemetal X4707 and Oxysilan systems

Chemetal’s X4707 pre-treatment system is specifically designed for aluminium, offering exceptional corrosion resistance and enhanced adhesion for powder coatings. This ensures long-lasting finishes that withstand harsh environmental conditions. Meanwhile, the Oxysilan system, used for other metals, leverages silane-based technology to deliver superior performance and durability. Together, these systems provide a robust, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chromate-based processes.

A strategic transition to chrome-free pre-treatment

Initially, the new plant setup operated alongside the existing system, allowing Tomburn to validate its performance and achieve operational stability before fully transitioning.
