The Second Severn Bridge spans over five kilometres and provides a crucial route between England and Wales. Any major works would cause major disruption so a key factor when constructing it in the mid-90s was to use methods and materials which would stand the test of time – and the harsh marine conditions it would be exposed to.
With steel being ruled as too heavy for the bridge’s baffles – which are designed to protect crossing vehicles from high winds – engineers had reservations about switching to aluminium, thinking that it would in time start to corrode.
Tomburn knew that a powder coating from Valspar had the durability to prove otherwise and was tasked with the project of applying mint green Syntha Pulvin to 10 linear kilometres. This would provide a fully weather resistant finish, including the prevention of UV fade.
The result is that nearly 30 years later the bridges baffles still look as good as new – retaining the original finish and requiring no remedial work. It’s been the perfect demonstration of how a powder coating finish will deliver unrivalled protection to metal that’s exposed to the elements.
